Aside from being something of a drinker, Charles Bukowski was also a real chameleon - à la Romain Gary, if you know what we mean. He went by various aliases: Buk, Henri Chinaski - and Hank.
When Romain Lainé (guitar & vocals) and Nicolas Pechitch (drums) formed Women For Hank in 2004, they wanted to pay homage to the man by combining the names of one of his personae and one of his most accomplished novels.
Without a doubt, Charles would have liked the name, but he wouldn't have sniffed at this tense, adventurous blues-rock either !
Women For Hank quickly grew from a duo to a four-piece, with the arrival of a second guitarist (Xavier Lages) and a bassist (John Vidal). After gigging extensively in Paris, Normandy and in Belgium, in September 2005 the group recorded a 4 track EP that Pop Only Knows is now delighted to offer in MP3 format.
From beginning to end, it's outstanding; they've crafted a Neil-Young-and-Mark-Lanegan-influenced rock. But WFH's music is never eclipsed by these godfathers of the genre, thanks notably to Romain's voice, in turn warm or abrasive, like on Hallelujah to my Friends.
The Women For Hank story ends in an ellipsis for now, with Romain having left for the States. But PoK will keep you up to date of any news.
But while you're waiting... don't miss this EP!
