There's a song by The Left Banke, the legendary 60s group, called "There's gonna be a storm". The title neatly sums up the music of eliotE & the ritournelles. For if Left Banke's baroque pop hardly resembles eliotE's subtly lysergic music (although...), this brilliant title fits them like a glove.
In effect, beneath the deceptively calm folk surface, the thunder grumbles and the stormclouds twist like the 2 guitarists' slides.
Formed in 2007, eliotE & the ritournelles are a trio: Minnie (vocals & acoustic guitar), Guillaume (guitars & backing vocals) & Thomas (guitars, backing vocals & arrangements). A folk trio, then, but a fashionable American acid-folk, or an English 70s folk style (Fairport convention, Pentangle). An exciting folk that's feverish & unstable, that can turn stormy at the drop of a hat, like their predecessors Espers.

An intoxicating folk, too, borne by Minnie's marvellous voice: a voice to give you gooseflesh (like on the sublime Sweet Hereafter), but that can be playful too (their charming nursery rhyme Pour Les Enfants Qui Ont Peur).
It's rare in France to hear such spellbinding, captivating music and singing. It would be a shame to pass by an Eldorado of the sort.
